Paul Christiano joins OpenAI Foundation board to advise on AI safety
The alignment researcher will help oversee safety and security as OpenAI develops increasingly capable AI systems.
Paul Christiano has joined the OpenAI Foundation Board as a non-voting observer to the board of OpenAI Group PBC. He will also serve on the Foundation’s Safety and Security Committee, which oversees safety and security practices across OpenAI. The appointment was announced by OpenAI News on September 9, 2026.
Christiano brings experience from both research and government. He founded the nonprofit Alignment Research Center and led alignment research at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021, where he contributed to foundational work on reinforcement learning from human feedback, or RLHF. At the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation, he has worked as a senior technical adviser on frontier-model evaluations, including capabilities with potential national-security implications.
Why it matters for AI builders
The role gives a prominent alignment researcher a direct position in governance decisions affecting the development and deployment of advanced models. For teams building AI products, that could mean greater attention to evidence-based safeguards, security controls, evaluation practices, and accountability before systems reach more capable or risky levels.
The Foundation says Christiano’s perspective is intended to challenge assumptions and strengthen oversight. He will work with Safety and Security Committee chair Zico Kolter, while Bret Taylor, chair of both the Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC boards, said Christiano’s technical and government experience would reinforce the committee’s work.
One limitation is that Christiano’s government role requires him to recuse himself from OpenAI-related matters and all model evaluations. The Foundation itself is a separate nonprofit that controls OpenAI Group PBC and holds a significant equity stake in it.
