A solar eclipse briefly pulled Europe offline
Cloudflare Radar found Internet traffic fell by up to 30% where the 2025 eclipse was deepest.

A total solar eclipse on August 12, 2025, caused a measurable pause in online activity across parts of Europe. In an analysis from CloudFlare, Cloudflare Radar compared HTTP request volumes during the eclipse with typical Wednesday traffic.
The effect was strongest in Iceland, Spain and Portugal, along with other areas close to the eclipse’s path. Regions experiencing totality or a deep partial eclipse saw traffic declines of roughly 15% to 30%. In some countries, the broader range of changes ran from a 9.3% increase to a 46.7% decrease.
The timing matched the eclipse
Cloudflare measured traffic in five-minute intervals and found the sharpest drops aligned closely with each location’s maximum solar obscuration. Activity generally recovered within minutes, as people returned to their devices. Countries with only shallow coverage, including Denmark, Poland, Switzerland and Sweden, saw little change; Norway and Sweden even recorded slight increases above baseline.
For AI tool builders, the findings are a useful reminder that demand is shaped by human attention—not just product launches, outages or seasonal trends. A sudden drop in API, inference or application traffic during a major real-world event may reflect users looking away from their screens rather than a technical problem. Systems that monitor regional baselines and external events could distinguish genuine service issues from temporary shifts in behavior, helping teams avoid unnecessary scaling or incident responses.
