OpenAI plans to end Cursor model access after SpaceX acquisition

OpenAI says it plans to wind down its contract supplying models to Cursor after Cursor was acquired by SpaceX. In a company announcement on OpenAI News, OpenAI said it notified SpaceX on August 28, 2026, and proposed November 12, 2026, as the service shutoff date.

The company is using the maximum notice period allowed under its agreement, giving developers more time to continue using OpenAI models through Cursor. However, OpenAI said it will not provide future models to the coding tool during the transition.

Why OpenAI is ending the deal

OpenAI cited uncertainty over whether SpaceX will use its technology within the company’s terms of service. Its concerns are based partly on what it describes as contract violations by companies associated with Elon Musk, including Twitter—now part of SpaceX—and xAI, which OpenAI says Musk acknowledged had violated its terms.

The decision also reflects tighter oversight around advanced models. OpenAI said its custom agreements with large partners are designed to enforce usage rules and support safety at scale. It specifically referenced its upcoming Astra model as a reason to ensure future systems are deployed within those requirements.

For AI developers, the change highlights the risk of building workflows around a third-party model provider inside another product. Cursor users who depend on OpenAI models may need to evaluate alternatives, migrate integrations, or prepare for changes before November 12. OpenAI said it respects Cursor’s team and intends to provide substantial support to developers affected by the transition after nearly four years of working together.
