OpenAI launches commercial operations in Brazil as developer adoption surges
OpenAI is opening a São Paulo operation to support Brazil’s fast-growing community of AI users, businesses, researchers, and developers.

OpenAI is launching commercial operations in Brazil, establishing a local team in São Paulo to work with companies, developers, researchers, and public institutions. The expansion was announced in OpenAI News on August 27, 2026.
The move follows rapid growth in the country. Brazil is one of ChatGPT’s three largest markets by weekly active users, with people sending roughly 215 million messages per day. In June 2026, work-related prompts represented 35% of classified messages from individual accounts in Brazil, compared with 30% worldwide. More than half of those work prompts—53%—asked ChatGPT to complete a task or produce an output, such as writing code, analyzing information, or creating marketing materials.
Why builders should care
Brazil is also becoming a major development hub for OpenAI tools. It ranks second globally by the number of developers using the OpenAI API and is Codex’s largest market in Latin America. Since the start of 2026, weekly Codex users in Brazil have grown more than elevenfold, while daily interactions have risen nearly thirtyfold. ChatGPT Enterprise seats have increased fivefold year over year.
OpenAI says its local team will help organizations identify use cases, train staff, establish governance, and scale deployments. Planned collaborations include ChatGPT Edu access and advanced-model credits for Brazil’s Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, AI research projects with IMPA and HCFMUSP, legal-sector AI literacy training, and mobile-first courses for small businesses.
The company’s first Portuguese-language OpenAI para Devs roadshow brought together 285 developers, founders, and technical creators across four cities. It concluded with a São Paulo hackathon where participants used Codex to build projects aimed at Brazilian needs, including a prototype helping small businesses find public procurement opportunities.
