OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens with learning-focused safeguards

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its assistant designed for users ages 13 to 17. The company says its systems will automatically place users in the teen experience when they identify as minors or are estimated to be under 18.

The product is centered on helping students understand concepts rather than simply retrieve answers. Its learning features include Study Mode, guided questions, step-by-step support, quizzes, learning visualizations, and scheduled “Study Hours” that can make guided study the default during selected times. A new Responsible Homework Reminder is intended to recognize when a student appears to be trying to bypass an assignment and redirect them toward collaborative problem-solving.

For people building AI tools, the launch highlights a broader design shift: age-specific experiences can combine model capability with product-level guardrails and learning goals. OpenAI says the teen offering builds on its parental controls, under-18 model guidance, age-prediction work, and research into healthier AI use. It also emphasizes that AI should support—not replace—active learning, while educators retain control over classroom deployments through ChatGPT for Teachers.

OpenAI is also announcing a partnership with CodeAI focused on helping students and educators understand how AI works, evaluate its mistakes, direct it effectively, and create with it. The company points to teen projects such as a Wi-Fi-based search-and-rescue system and an audio learning platform for blind students as examples of the kinds of practical, socially useful work it wants to encourage.

The release puts safety, educational scaffolding, and AI literacy alongside raw model access—an approach likely to influence how developers design tools for younger users.
