OpenAI expands ChatGPT for Teachers to 55 more U.S. school systems

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT for Teachers to 55 additional U.S. school systems across 20 states, adding access for more than 100,000 educators and staff. The company announced the move in OpenAI News on August 26, 2026.

The new group includes one in five of the country’s 20 largest public school districts. Overall, OpenAI says it now works with more than 100 K–12 organizations in 30 states, providing free access and training to over 300,000 educators and staff. The service is limited to verified U.S. K–12 educators, administrators, and faculty, and will remain free through June 2028.

Privacy becomes part of the rollout

OpenAI is also introducing a National Data Privacy Agreement covering 16 states through the Student Data Privacy Consortium framework. The agreement is intended to give districts a shared route for assessing the product against local student-data requirements, rather than negotiating separate terms district by district. California has a separate agreement.

For builders and education technology teams, the rollout highlights that deploying AI in schools involves more than model capability. Districts need procurement pathways, administrative controls, role-based access, training, and governance. OpenAI says data in ChatGPT for Teachers workspaces is not used to train its models by default, and the product includes controls designed to support schools’ FERPA obligations.

The company’s implementation model pairs access with hands-on educator training, leadership support, peer learning, and ongoing feedback. That approach positions teachers as participants in shaping classroom use, rather than treating AI as a plug-in that operates independently of school policy or human judgment.
