OpenAI and CodeAI launch partnership to build teen AI literacy

OpenAI and CodeAI announced a broad education partnership on August 18 aimed at helping students understand AI—not merely use it. The collaboration arrives alongside OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT for Teens, an experience designed around learning, critical thinking, teen safety protections, and parental controls.

The companies point to a widening gap between adoption and education: most students are already using AI, but only 16% of high school leaders say every student is receiving the technical knowledge needed to understand it in class. In a CodeAI survey, 75% of high school students said AI literacy will be more important to their futures than it is today.

What the partnership includes

Over the next year, OpenAI and CodeAI plan to establish a joint advisory council covering child development, youth policy, and learning science. They will also use the Hour of AI program to introduce millions of students to responsible AI practices.

A new Builders Challenge will give high school students opportunities to create with AI, receive mentorship from OpenAI staff, and present their work nationally with supporting teachers. OpenAI experts will advise CodeAI as it develops AI Foundations, a free year-long high school course, while Career Journeys will connect students with OpenAI researchers, engineers, and leaders.

For AI tool builders, the announcement signals a shift toward education that covers model limitations, verification, and responsible use alongside product access. It also emphasizes teachers and families as essential partners, rather than treating AI as a replacement for classroom guidance. The outcome could influence how future users evaluate AI outputs—and how the next generation learns to design these systems themselves.
