Claude Can Now Query Anthropic’s Economic Index

Anthropic has launched a connector that lets Claude users query the Anthropic Economic Index directly. The company announced the tool on July 22, 2026, in Anthropic News, positioning it as a simpler way for researchers, builders, workers, and curious users to investigate how AI is being used.

The Index tracks patterns in Claude usage across the economy. With the connector enabled, users can ask questions such as which occupations use AI most, how people in Colorado use Claude, what teachers use it for, or which tasks are being automated and how those patterns have shifted over the past year.

How it works

In claude.ai, users open the connectors menu, select the Anthropic Economic Index from the directory, and enable it. There is no installation step, and the connector works in any conversation with any Claude model. Users can begin with a broad question about their industry, then request more specific findings or ask Claude to surface the underlying data.

For AI tool developers, the launch points to a practical use for connectors: turning a public research dataset into an interactive analysis layer rather than requiring people to browse tables or build their own queries. It could also help teams compare AI adoption patterns across occupations and regions when planning workflows or evaluating automation opportunities.

Anthropic cautions that the Index represents Claude usage, not the entire labor market. Claude will identify the dataset’s limitations and direct users to the original information. The complete datasets remain freely available on Anthropic’s website.
