Anthropic commits $200 million to test policies for an AI-shaped economy

Anthropic is launching a $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund to finance external research on how societies can prepare for AI’s economic effects.

The company says the goal is to find practical interventions that make economies more adaptable, distribute AI’s gains more broadly, and reduce harm from disruption. The initiative expands Anthropic’s earlier Economic Futures program, shifting toward larger grants and ambitious pilots rather than managing many small awards.

What the fund will study

Anthropic has identified five priority areas:

• How firms and workplaces can integrate AI in ways that support workers and share productivity gains
• Training, education, job placement, and other tools for people navigating career transitions
• New approaches to income support if AI contributes to displacement
• Ways workers can gain a stake in AI-driven growth before disruption occurs
• Better evidence on the effects of public investment

The fund is open globally, although Anthropic’s examples are currently weighted toward the United States. It expects most awards to fall between $5 million and $30 million, with flexibility for especially promising projects. Proposals below $1 million will not be funded directly.

Eligible applicants include universities, independent research institutes, policy organizations, and nonprofits experienced in running large field experiments. Anthropic is particularly interested in randomized studies, scalable pilots, and projects that publish useful findings at key milestones rather than waiting for lengthy research cycles to conclude.

For AI tool builders, the agenda signals that deployment research is moving beyond model performance. Questions about workplace design, worker participation, training, and who captures productivity gains could influence how AI products are introduced and evaluated. The fund may also create opportunities for organizations testing new human-AI workflows at meaningful scale.
